Very grand and historic hotel, not for the modernistas of this world. We booked it up due to good reviews and good deal available. On entering, the Palace is very grand and opulent, with large chandeliers and high ceilings. Good location, right near Union Square. Staff helpful enough - although I did clock the tea person tapping their hand impatiently against the trolley as I made my tea in the foyer just before 10am then whizzing the trolley away (I'm guessing they finished at 10am!) Room was good size and clean with nice tv, but walls are thin as you can hear other people quite easily. It was also very sparse and not very inviting, bathroom had greyish/cream toilet seat - not exactly luxury although bed was comfortable enough. No tea or coffee making facilities are available in the room and the water is not complimentary - $7 a bottle! Was just tired and could have done with updating, stayed in more "Luxury" hotels for less.

Commenté par D de Warrington le sept. 9, 2009
Easy to get to by BART from airport since it stops right outside hotel. If you are using public transport apart from cable cars, lots of buses and street cars stop right outside hotel, so excellent way to see the city. Also since you are in the business district, lots of places to eat breakfast / lunch. Hotel itself well looked after. Everything quite expensive. Room service charges very expensive so avoid unless really hungry in the middle of the night. No free internet or wifi in the room which is disappointing (but knew about it already) but free wifi in the lobby. No coffee/tea making facilities in room but freely available every morning on lobby. The cafe attached to hotel is great for breakfast. Room good with gowns and nice toiletries. Thoroughly recommend but book through hotel.com for good rate since hotel rates are very pricey if booked direct.

We live in the Bay Area, and decided to spend a night in the City before school started. My daughter likes to swim, and this hotel is one of the only hotels in SF with a pool. It was our first stay, and I could not have been more impressed. Staff were wonderful, pool, spa and workout area were in superior order. The room was clean (we were given a free upgrade to a larger room), beds were super comfy and the shower was like a rainforest in heaven. After shopping and dinner out, I wanted to stop for coffee, but the Starbucks was closed so we stopped in the Hotel Bar. The bartender gave me a cup to take to the room - on the house. My duaghter was admiring the art on the wall which sis a painting of the Pied Piper. He gave her a small copy of the print with the story on the back of how it came to be on the wall in the Hotel. We had a wonderful stay, and will go back at our earliest opportunity. Will definitely recommend it to friends and family.

Great old hotel. While it is older, the hotel has been maintained very well. No need for a car - there is a Bart Station that lets off right across from the hotel. It is also one of the few hotels with a pool. Be careful though, the pool deck is smooth tile and is very slippery. Rooms were adequately sized. We had a family of four with two double beds. Given the size of the rooms, the hotel could easily add to everyone's satisfaction by using queen beds - though, in reviewing other hotels in the vicinity - I did not come across others that had queen beds either. We did have some very noisy neighbors on our last night - up late with a crying baby and up early as well. I don't know that the hotel could have really done much about that. All in all, a very nice hotel for our four day stay.

All in all, we were very happy with the Palace Hotel. The bed was very comfortable, and the room was comfortably sized. Use of the pool and jacuzzi is complimentary (unlike some other hotels in San Francisco), and although the jacuzzi was quite small, it did the job just fine. There is a BART and MUNI station just outside the door, but we actually just walked to a lot of places, given the hotel's central location. We would definitely stay there again.

We spent 4 nights at this elegant and stylish downtown hotel on our Californian vacation. I can't say enough about the Palace. The room was spacious and comfortable enough for the three of us travelling together. The hotel itself is well located, minutes from both the Ferry terminal and the central shopping areas at Union Square and Market Street. The historic trolley bus service to Fisherman's wharfs stops right outside the door. All in all, an outstanding experience and we will be back.

Commenté par D de Brooklyn le août 16, 2009
We are frequent business travelers and I think the appearance and general elegance of the hotel is on par with a Ritz (grandeur). The Palace Hotel is gorgeous, with a beautiful atrium-like garden court where we enjoyed the breakfast buffet spread for three days. I thought the service was excellent as they gave us great restaurant recommendations, all within walking distance. We originally booked with Palace to swim with our children everyday, but the pool is probably below 82 degrees and in the evenings, it can get pretty crowded. That said, is plenty to do and enjoy in SF! For those of you who want to rent a car, I would suggest using a cab instead, which is what we did. The parking is expensive and less convenient. All in all, we would definitely recommend and return to the Palace. (Our alternatives at the same price point were Hilton, Westin and Omni).

First the bad: Our pre-paid Deluxe room was on the 8th floor - highest floor with rooms. The room faced an inside well - and being on the 'top' floor we had more diffused sunlight then a lower room would have. It was explained that the layout of the hotel the "deluxe' rooms were larger and the larger rooms were on the inside. The room itself had a piece of furniture so stained and gross - we had it removed - which they did quickly. Stall shower only (built into a bath tub so small only a child or someone with great knees could fold into it). 3 lamps - not one for reading in bed - and you had to get out of bed to turn them off. Room service trays littered the hallways at ALL hours of the day - we saw the same trays in the AM still there in the late afternoon. The bed was simply worn -soft - old. Business center computers billed at close to $1.00 per minute The good: The Concierge service was fantastic - Room service was excellent (expensive but that's to be expected). Dining under the dome - buffet on Sunday - the waiter saw we ate light and adjusted the bill without asking. This could be a great hotel - if they put some money back into the rooms.

Very expensive basic package. Everything else you pay for. $7 for a bottle of water in the room is proof of this. As advertised, complimentry bottled water in the room, only the first day!! Complimentry coffee in the lobby, only up to 8am Week Days!! It would'nt be too much to expect coffee making facilities in the rooms. This is a very elegant Hotel maintained to the very highest standards, except for the Pool and Jaccuzi area. We found this area to be in a poor condition (Unclean), completely out of character with the rest of the Hotel. If you want a Market Street view room, make sure it is on the upper levels, there is alot of street noise and we were on the third floor. I believe that there is better value to be got in the San Francisco Area.

Everyone was very nice to us. It was pride weekend and typically I don't get treated as well as other people because of the way I look. I look young and like I don't have a ton of money. That is not the case but I tend to get bad service cause of it. I know that I was treated just like anyone else at the hotel. We ended up staying an extra night because we loved the hotel so much and wanted to shop more.

The Palace is a National Historical Landmark, and a beautifully maintained one. In fact, City Tours offers a one-hour tour of it three times a week, which we took and found very interesting. The beautifully restored Garden Court shouldn't be missed by any SF traveler. Just a block or two walk to SF Museum of Modern Art, SF Historical Society, Contemporary Jewish Museum, Museum of the African Diaspora, and Yerba Buena Gardens. Lunch or snack at the Farmers Market in the Metreon for authenic African, Indian, and other ethnic foods. Public transportation is excellent, with BART's Montomery stop at the corner of the hotel, and Market Street buses and trolleys. If you're looking for big rooms, a complementary breakfast, and kid-friendly amenities, this probably won't be the place for you. For those of us who relish the opportunity to peek into SF's storied past, this is a good choice.

This hotel is still under the impression that it's still 1940 & they are GRAND hotel catering to GRAND people. It's not & they aren't. There's NO supervision in the pool area which allows parents to completely ignore the behavior of their children which inappropriate & a complete burden to the rest of us trying to use the facilities. They consistently ran out of pool towels too. The small 'free' coffee service they provided was only available until 8:30 M-F, you had to wait in a line to get any & usually they were out of coffee or creamer or sugar... something - always. Ridiculous. The bed pillows in our room were about 1/4" high - meaning sooo many heads had slept where mine now was... it was a disturbing thought. Overall, I felt this was a Super8 Motel rapped in a beautiful Hotel facade. Only at Super8, they give you pastries with your coffee. Sad.

Very convenient to the BART and Muni buses/trollies. The hotel is beautiful and full of history. The only downside is dining. The main courtyard area is gorgeous, but too expensive to eat there! Breakfast is $28.50 per person. We ate at Neetos Dinner for breakfast... just a block away. We also ate at Maxfields "bar food", but it was very good. If you plan on spending time at the wharf you may find this location inconvenient. We got a great deal through the Internet for a junior suite. I would recommend the hotel IF you can get a deal. Full price would be a hard sell for me.

From the moment we arrived, the concierge were genuinely friendly and professional. The single bed room was cute, but overpriced, and the Pied Piper Bar was neat. The employees, as a whole, were organized, and though it's a big hotel with many guests, I never once got the feeling that I was any less memorable to them than the person staying in the luxury suite. Like a classic car upgraded with power steering and windows, the Palace Hotel has modernized itself without losing its old-fashioned elegance. You will spend more than you would for a comparable room elsewhere, but for a weekend getaway, it was perfect.
